Tenth entry in this year’s #Decemboobs, an annual month-long challenge for cartoonists and other artists to draw breasts that work. Drawn, as usual for me this year, with pencils and graphite pencils on illustration board. While working this, I had an epiphany, and it’s not about boobs. It’s about faces. I realized that I do a pretty good job getting the major geometry (shapes, volumes, angles) of any drawing onto my sketch quickly when it comes to drawing the body, but I don’t do that for the faces. I draw in the faces using the traditional cartoonist method of drawing angle lines on the head (the big curved cross that tells you where the eyes should and where the vertical center of the face is), and then I start with the eyes. But the eyes aren’t part of the major geometry. It might be far better for me to start with the nose and mouth, then the overal eye socket area and when those are positioned right, I should draw in the eyes. I’ll try that, but not tomorrow because tomorrow’s entry won’t have a face in it.
